41 The Bunker

Five weeks beforehand I had been interviewed by a Ministry of Defence panel at an office in Waterloo Street, Glasgow. There were four specialists on the Board and they had asked me many difficult questions, over a period of an hour, and I apparently gave them the right answers. And so they said they would be in touch. Later they had sent me a whole load of forms, and the like, in a big fat envelope..

Eighteen months later I was working underground in a bunker under the City. But we will continue the 1978/79 story for the meantime. We will stay in the Winter of Discontent, when the rubbish wasn’t being collected, and Labour wasn’t working, and a certain Mrs Thatcher was leader of the Opposition.
