The tape recorder whirrs away as it rewinds. It stops at the start of the tape. Josh presses Play. There is silence, then Josh’s voice speaks.
“…for Tommy … who has … shuffled off this mortal coil … this one’s for you Tommy … I miss you man.” Silence. Then Josh thinks he hears a whisper on the recording. He winds the tape back, plays it again, and puts his ear close to the speaker this time. He feels that he hears something whispering in the background silence.
“What the f*ck,” he says to himself. He gets up from the table and heads for the other room. He grabs a set of headphones, comes back, sits back down, and plugs them in to the machine. He puts the phones on and plays the tape again. After “I miss you man” he hears a high-pitched cry that sounds like “owwwww”. He puts his hand over his mouth in disbelief. His eyes widen. He takes the headphones off and just sits there, looking incredulous. “Holy Shit,” he says, finally.
